Son dernier album, "The Gentleman Is Back", porte bien son nom car, après dix ans d'absence discographique, Johnnie Bassett est de retour : subtilité, swing et élégance sont plus que jamais au rendez-vous. Né en Floride en 1935, Bassett a très tôt rencontré des guitaristes comme Big Bill Bronzy, Arthur Crudup et Tampa Red. En 1944, sa famille quitte la Floride et migre à Detroit. Dans les années 50, à son entrée à l’université, il fait ses débuts professionnels avec Joe Weaver & The Bluenotes. Au cours de sa longue carrière, Johnnie Bassett a croisé la route de John Lee Hooker, Smokey Robinson et même Jimi Hendrix. Combinant de façon unique le jump blues et les styles du Delta, Johnnie Bassett imprime avec une aisance déconcertante sa marque de fabrique à tous les morceaux qu'il interprète et leur confère un cachet d'authenticité inimitable. Na bijna tien jaar is Johnnie Bassett uiteindelijk terug met een merkwaardige nieuwe CD, "The Gentleman Is Back". Subtiliteit, swing en elegantie zijn opnieuw van de partij. Geboren in 1935 in Florida, waar hij bij haar grootmoeder gitaristen als Big Bill Broonzy, Arthur Crudup en Tampa Red zag optreden, verhuisde Johnnie al vroeg met zijn familie naar Detroit. Reeds als tiener trok hij op met pianist Joe Weaver & The Bluenotes en werkte als sessiemuzikant voor het label Fortune Records. Tijdens zijn lange carrière trad Johnnie op met befaamde artiesten als John Lee Hooker, Smokey Robinson en zelfs Jimi Hendrix. Op een unieke manier combineert Johnnie Bassett de jump blues met de Deltastijlen en alles wat hij speelt klinkt spontaan en authentiek.

Born in Marianna, Florida, Johnnie Bassett recalls early encounters with blues artists Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, Big Bill Broonzy and Tampa Red during weekend events at his grandmother's home. The Bassett family relocated to Detroit, Michigan, where Johnnie would begin his career as a member of Joe Weaver & The Blue Notes - working as studio musicians for Fortune Records. After serving two years in the Army, he moved to Seattle, performing with Johnnie "Guitar" Watson, Tina Turner, and providing advice and encouragement to an aspiring young guitarist named Jimmy James, later to be known as Jimi Hendrix. Johnnie Bassett's unique ability to combine jump blues and Delta stylings gives his playing a distinctive and definitive touch that makes anything he plays sound like the most natural and, in fact, the “only” true version of the piece.
